Shih Tzu's name means little lion, but there is nothing to fear from this dog breed. They are more of a lover than a hunter, and Shih Tzu love to follow their people from place to place. They are lovable, happy house dogs. The dog can instantly win your heart with its cute face. Shih Tzu are one of the most popular breeds in the United States.  

Originated in the 17th century in China, the little lion dog is a cross between Tibetan Spaniel and Lhasa Apso. The breed is sensitive to heat and requires only moderate exercise, and they always enjoy being with their family or loved ones. The Shih Tzu is a reasonably healthy breed that lives for 13 to 15 years. 

Health issues of the Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu are a generally healthy breed with a 12- to 14-year lifespan. However, like with any purebreds, there may be health issues like as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye illness. Shih Tzu have large eyes, and they can quickly get hurt. If you suspect any injury in the eye, immediately notify your veterinary doctor. Juvenile renal dysplasia is a severe problem with Shih Tzu and in this condition, kidneys fail to develop normally. It should also be mentioned that Shih Tzu have thick coats and short faces, making swimming and heat tolerance difficult for them.

Care and Grooming of the Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu is perfect for those who like a fun playing dog. They love to spend time with their loved ones, and their charming personality can steal anyone's heart. Shih Tzu are also ideal apartment dogs due to their low activity requirements. The normal Shih Tzu will get adequate exercise through daily walks and indoor fun. The long and flowing coats of the Shih Tzu require high maintenance and daily brushing. Daily brushing can help in avoiding tangles and matting. 

Shih Tzu are highly active dogs, and they love to sit at the owner’s lap. They wander around the house, play with the toys and run from door to door to look for the visitors. Shih Tzu thinks that they can fly, so they jump from the bed or chair, or sofa. 

While these heights may not seem excessive to you, they are enormous to the little Shih Tzu. Unfortunately, these leaps often result in harm. The breed is front-heavy and tends to fall forward, which may result in injuries or even a concussion. When transporting your Shih Tzu, use extreme caution. Keep a tight grip on them, and don't allow them to leap out of your arms or off the furniture.

The Shih Tzu is a kind, loving, and adorable dog. The Shih Tzu has been documented in historical art and writings from at least 624, and Shih Tzu have been bred as companion dogs for ages. As a result, your Shih Tzu will want to be your greatest buddy rather than a security dog or an animal herder.

The personality of the Shih Tzu

Like every dog breed, Shih Tzu also have a purpose, and it's to be a perfect companion. They want to be your companion, and they want to be with their owner most of the time. Shih Tzu are alert and lively. And they may bark at the unknown people. Their dominating quality is affection, and your lap is their preferred location. When they're with their family, giving and receiving attention, they're at their happiest.
