Abstract

Autoimmune Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain cells resulting from a condition where the body's immune system targets the healthy tissues of the brain & spinal cord. This disorder is manifested as both psychiatric and neurological symptoms. These symptoms may vary from person to person or on disease’s severity. Seizures are the most common predominant symptoms in this disease. The neurological includes altered levels of consciousness, irritability, disturbed sleeping patterns, movement abnormalities, speech disturbances, ataxia, paralysis of the limbs also psychiatric features such as personality changes, mood swings, restlessness, hallucinations or delusions etc. The diagnostic methods include evaluation of CSF fluid by lumbar puncture, MRI brain or Electroencephalogram (EEG). Treatment methods in the modern medicine system are used by corticosteroids & immunosuppressive medications. Introduction

All the autoimmune conditions in Ayurveda are considered to be originated due to ama dosha (endotoxins), the amadosha is created when the food material is left undigested and it is being converted into the toxins.

Due to weak digestive power, the food material which has remained undigested, that undigested endotoxins is known as ama which is the basic cause of vitiation of all the doshas.

These toxins then vitiate the tridosha which will affect the body’s normal metabolism at cellular level when these vitiated dosha start disturbing the various senses and body tissues mostly affecting the body fluids first i.e. lymph extracellular fluid then vitiating the blood and ultimately the cerebrospinal fluid, when these vitiated dosha with aggravated raja & tama dosha under the influence of ama (endotoxins) may result in the alteration of normal functioning of brain cells and thus causing mastishka soth which in later stages may presented with hatojas abhinayas sanipaat jwar.

Roop (Signs & symptoms)

The symptoms presented in this condition are usually the combination of hatojas Abhinayas sannipat jwar and rakt dhatu gata jwara (as it involves vitiation of blood microchannel vitiation).

Symptoms of Abhinayas jwar are

1. The normal touch of the patient seems neither too hot nor too cool.
2. Blunting of hearing & vision,
3. Imapaired activities, senses
4. Loss of sensations,
5. Restlessness,
6. Pricking pain,
7. Aphasia or difficulty in speaking
8. Altered sleeping pattern,
9. Delirium.

If the patient is presented with weakness along with above mentioned symptoms then this disease is called Hatojas which in later stages may lead to sanyas (coma).

Also, due to manas dosha involvement (raja & tama dosha) & mahovaha strotas vitiation various symptoms such as seizures, convulsive movement of extremities, delusions and episodes of unconsciousness.
