Overview

Arthritis is a common joint disorder that cause inflammation of joints. It may involve one or more joints. There are different factors which are responsible for this problem. It is autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of joints. Auto immune diseases are illnesses in which body’s immune system that is meant to produce antibodies against any foreign particle like virus or bacteria, start attacking its own system by fault and causes inflammation, swelling, pain and stiffness in the joints.

It is called as Amavata in Ayurveda and its main cause is imbalance of vata and accumulation of toxins in the body. Due to increase intake of indigestible, heavy and incompatible food, having food at improper time, lack of physical activity.

The common form of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. If arthritis is not treated it can lead to permanent damage of the joints. Women are at high risk of developing arthritis. Common symptoms of arthritis are Tender, warm, swollen joints, fatigue, fever, weight loss and joint stiffness which is usually worse in the morning.

Here we will discuss the few Home Remedies for Arthritis that will help to manage the symptoms.

HOME REMEDIES FOR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

GINGER

  • Use of ginger has been famous since ages to treat inflammatory diseases. A bioactive compound gingerol found in ginger is packed with the anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling.

How to use

  • Chew some fresh ginger pieces daily.
  • Take the ginger oil and rub on the affected area. Then uncover that area to sun for 5 to 10 minutes to produce warmth and heat. Do it regularly.
  • Include the ginger slices in your cooking.
  • One can drink 2 to 3 cups of ginger tea daily.

HOT AND COLD COMPRESSES

  • Application of hot and cold compresses is quite effective to manage the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. A hot compress helps to reduce pain by soothing sore muscles and joints. Whereas the cold compress may help to lessen the pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to use

  • For the hot compress, wrap a hot water bag in a towel.
  • For the cold compress, wrap some ice cubes in a thin cloth.
  • Place the hot compress on the affected area for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Then replace  it with cold compress and place for about 1 minute.
  • Repeat it for 15 to 20 minutes a few times daily until you observe the noticeable change.

TURMERIC

  • To manage the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, use of turmeric is quite good.  Curcumin, bio active compound ingredient in turmeric, contains potent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties that work well to reduce the pain and inflammation. Additionally, turmeric can inhibit joint inflammation by blocking certain enzymes and cytokines.

How to use

    Add 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder in water and boil until it gets reduced to half. Allow it to cool and drink it twice daily.

    Another option is to include the turmeric powder in daily cooking.

GARLIC

    Garlic possess the strong anti-inflammatory properties which make it an effective home remedy for rheumatoid arthritis. It hinders the formation of free radicals that may cause the joint damage and stimulates a healthy immune system.   Moreover, Garlic inhibits the production of cytokines which further helps to reduce pain and swelling.

How to Use

  • consume the 2-3 raw and fresh garlic daily.

FENUGREEK

  • Fenugreek seeds being packed the vitamins, essential minerals like iron, calcium and phosphorus are quite useful for rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, fenugreek seeds possess the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which help to alleviate the pain and swelling.

How to use

    Take 1-2 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and soak them in water for whole night.

    Next morning, strain the water and eat the soaked seeds.  Repeat this remedy daily until you observe the noticeable change.

    Alternatively, you can eat the one teaspoon of fenugreek seed powder along with a glass of warm water twice or thrice daily.

GREEN TEA

  • Green tea contains the polyphenols that aid in reducing inflammation and also help to protect the joints. Daily consumption of green tea is quite effective to slow down the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.   On the other hand, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help to reduce joint pain and swelling.

How to Use

    Add one teaspoon of green tea leaves and into a cup of hot water.

    Steep it for a few minutes.

    Strain and add a little honey.

    Consume 2 to 3 cups of green tea daily for better results.

HONEY AND CINNAMON

  • Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Cinnamon and honey add in water then taken in the morning. A paste of cinnamon and honey can be used to massage the affected area. This can help in relieving the pain.

EPSOM SALT

  • Epsom salt contains magnesium that helps in regulating the levels of alkalinity and acidity in the body. Magnesium in the Epsom salt is known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties.

How to use

  • The most common form in which Epsom salt is used is the Epsom bath. Salt is mixed with bath water. The person should take this bath for some duration and magnesium sulfate compound get absorbed into the skin
