How To Play Rhythm Guitar In Perfect Time Like The Gears Of A Watch

By Tom Hess

Playing rhythm guitar in perfect time makes you sound like a total pro and gives you skills that make other guitarists jealous.

Good news:

Playing rhythm guitar with great timing is not as hard as you might think.

This test helps you play rhythm guitar with incredible timing like the gears of a watch:

Rhythm Guitar Timing Test - Part 1

Step 1: Get out your metronome and set it to about 100 beats per minute.

Step 2: Choose any basic power chord and begin playing it once per beat over the click of the metronome.

Focus on making the click of the metronome disappear below the power chord.

If you're ahead of or behind the beat this shows you that improvement is needed in your timing.

Step 3: Now pick a tempo ten to twenty beats faster and repeat the previous step. Play through the fast and slow tempos until you can consistently make the click disappear.

Rhythm Guitar Timing Test - Part 2

Step 1: Set your metronome to about 100 beats per minute.

Step 2: Play any note four times per every single click (16th notes).

Use extra power to accent the first note of every click and focus on making the beat disappear under that note (as you did previously).

Adding more notes adds more challenge to keeping precise time.

Step 3: Now pick a tempo ten to twenty beats faster and repeat the previous step. Play through the fast and slow tempos until you can consistently make the click disappear.

Going through this test helps you understand what it’s like to play with excellent timing. However, this is just the beginning for becoming a great rhythm guitarist.
