According to this shloka:

A brain abscess can be correlated to the krimijanya Shiroroga. The main symptoms are:

  1. Pricking pain in the head
  2. It seems like that the internal part of the brain is engulfed by the microbes
  3. A sensation of breaking or bursting of the skull bones
  4. Blood and pus mixed watery discharge from nose
  5. Extremely painful

As per Ayurveda aspect:

  • The abscess is correlated to the shotha in Ayurveda. It is caused due to the vitiated Vata dosha which displaces the vitiated, rakta, pitta and Kapha dosha and circulate them into the body channels. The Vata dosha gets obstructed by these vitiated elements and causes its accumulation in between the twak (skin) and mamsa (muscles) which causes swelling in the body.

As per modern aspect:

  • Brain abscess is also referred to as a cerebral abscess. It is caused due to the inflammation and pus that comes from the sources of the local infections such as dental abscess, ear infection, epidural abscess, infection of the paranasal sinuses or remote organs such as lung, heart, kidney, etc. It is usually associated with congenital heart disease in younger children but may occur at any age but it is more frequent in the third decade of life.

What are the causes of brain abscess?

  • Brain abscess may likely to occur due to the fugal or bacterial infection in some parts of the brain. These microbes may also cause an abscess.
  • When the fungi, bacteria or any other parasite infect the part of the brain, it causes swelling and inflammation. In this case, the abscess will consist of infected brain cells, WBCs (active and dead) and the parasites that cause the problem.
  • As the cells start accumulating, there is a development of membrane around the abscess. This membrane or wall helps to isolate the infection and prevents it from spreading to the other healthy tissues. If the abscess swells then it puts increasing pressure on the surrounding brain tissues.
  • The skull is not flexible and cannot expand. So the increased pressure from the abscess can block the vessels and prevents the oxygen from reaching the brain which results in the damage or destruction of the brain tissues.

The other causes that develop the chances of developing a brain abscess:

  • Weak immunity
  • Chronic disorders such as cancer
  • Drugs which suppress the immune system
  • Congenital heart diseases

What are the symptoms of brain abscess?

The main signs and symptoms of brain abscess are:

  • Fever
  • Headache

  • Vomiting

Seizures may be the first sign of abscess and nausea and vomiting may occur when the pressure builds inside the brain.

  1. Poor mental focus

Other main symptoms are:

  1. Neck stiffness which may also occur in shoulders or back region
