Psoriasis is a skin condition that is characterised by the changes in the life cycle of skin cells. It causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form thick, silvery scales, itchy, dry patches that are sometimes painful. According to modern medicine, Psoriasis is a long-lasting and chronic disease. Sometimes, psoriasis symptoms get better alternating with times psoriasis worsens. So the primary goal of the treatment is to stop the skin cells from growing so quickly. Allopathic treatment includes using a non-prescription cortisone cream and exposing the skin to small amounts of natural sunlight may improve psoriasis symptoms but it can be cured by psoriasis herbal remedies and by making certain changes in the diet.

What are the symptoms of Psoriasis?

Psoriasis signs and symptoms can vary from person to person but may include one or more of the following:

  1. Small scaling roots(commonly seen in children)
  2. Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
  3. Itching/burning/soreness
  4. Dry/cracked skin that may even bleed
  5. Swollen and stiff joints
  6. Thickened/pitted or ridged nails.
  7. Patches that may range from a few spots of dandruff like scaling to major eruptions.

Types of Psoriasis

1. Plaque Psoriasis-- This is one of the most common types of Psoriasis. This form of Psoriasis causes dry, red, raised skin lesions covered with silvery scales. The plaques itch or may be painful and can occur anywhere on the body including on the genitals and on the soft tissues inside the mouth. Plaques may be just a few or many.

2. Nail Psoriasis-- Psoriasis can also affect fingernails, toenails causing pitting, abnormal nail growth and discolouration. As a result, nails may become loose and separate from the nail bed. In severe cases, nails may get crumbled.

3. Scalp Psoriasis-- Psoriasis on the scalp appears as silvery white scales with red and itchy areas. The red and scaly areas often get extend beyond the hairline. Patient may notice flakes of dead skin in hair or on shoulders especially after scratching the scalp.

4. Guttate Psoriasis--  This type of Psoriasis affects children and young adults. It is triggered by bacterial infection such as-- throat infection etc. It is characterised by small, water-drop shaped sores on the trunk, arms, legs and scalp. The sores are covered by a fine scale and aren't thick as typical plaques are. Patient may have a single ooutbreak that goes away its own or may have repeated episodes.

5. Pustular Psoriasis-- This is an uncommon type of psoriasis that occur in widespread patches or in smaller areas on hands, feet or fingertips. It develops quickly with pus filled blisters appearing in just hours after the skin becomes red and tender. The blisters may come and go frequently. It also causes fever, chills, severe itching and diarrhoea.

6. Inverse Psoriasis-- It mainly affects the skin of armpits, in the groin , under the breasts region and around the genitals. It causes smooth red patches and inflamed skin which gets worsened by friction and sweating. Fungal infections trigger this type of Psoriasis.

7. Psoriatic Arthritis-- Psoriatic arthritis causes pitted, discoloured nails and the swollen, painful joints that are typical to arthritis in addition to inflamed and scaly skin. Although the disease is not usually crippling as other forms of arthritis but it can cause stiffness and progressive joint damage.

What are the causes of Psoriasis?

  • According to modern medicine, the cause of Psoriasis is not known but it is thought to be related to an immune system problem with cells in the body. More specifically, it is related with a WBC known as T-cell or T-lymphocyte.  T-cells travel throughout the body to detect and fight off foreignn substances  such as bacteria or viruses. If the person is suffering from Psoriasis, T-cells attack healthy skin cells by mistake as if to heal a wound or to fight an infection. As a result, over active T-cells trigger other immune responses also. The effects include dilation of blood vessels in the skin around the plaques and in increase in other white blood cells that can enter the outer layer of skin.
  • These changes result in increased production of both healthy skin cells and more T-cells which causes an ongoing cycle in which new skin cells move to the outermost layer of skin too quickly-- in days rather than weeks. Dead skin and white blood cells can't slough off quickly  enough and build up in thick, scaly patches on the skin's surface. This usually doesn't stop unless treatment interrupts the cycle.

Factors that may trigger Psoriasis:

  1. Infections such as strep throat or skin infections.
  2. Stress
  3. Cold weather
  4. Injury to the skin such as cut or scrape or severe sunburn
  5. Smoking
  6. Alcohal consumption
  7. Certain medications including lithium and medicines which are prescribed for high blood pressure such as beta-blockers, anti-malarial drugs and iodides.
