The time has passed when fuel consumption was something insignificant because you could fill the entire tank for ridiculous money. For this reason, the muscle cars that were produced with huge engines that consume a lot of gasoline became less popular. Now, more and more people are concerned about the efficiency of their cars, not only because of skyrocketing fuel prices but also because of more rational use of resources.

Buyers no longer want monsters on wheels that burn a liter of gasoline per minute, they need an economical car. The same applies to crossovers, which previously could not boast of efficiency. Nowadays, you can buy a crossover that will consume less than some subcompact 10 years ago. Below are 10 of the most economical crossovers of 2022.

1. Kia Sorento Hybrid
Kia Sorento is a mid-size crossover that has also not been recognized for its fuel economy before. In the new 2022 model, engineers installed a 177 horsepower engine plus a 59 horsepower electric motor. It seems that with such power, the crossover should consume gasoline for all the money, but no. In the city, consumption is 6.8 liters per 100 km, in mixed mode 6.3, and outside the city, even 6 liters.

2. Audi Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro
This car is one of the most economical of those presented in the article because with a total power of 362 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 100 in just 5.3 seconds, as well as a top speed of 239 kilometers per hour, this far from small crossover consumes only 2 .1 liter per 100 kilometers. Of course, we are talking about the mixed mode. At the same time, if gasoline suddenly runs out, the Audi Q5 55 TFSI e Quattro can travel another 40 kilometers at speeds up to 135 kilometers per hour.

3. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Older Toyota RAV4 models weren't famous for their efficiency, consuming over 10 liters per 100 kilometers. And this is even though this model is positioned as a compact crossover, and not a full-fledged SUV. With newer models, consumption has decreased, but not by much.

In 2022, a new version of the Toyota RAV4 comes out with a hybrid engine, which, according to the manufacturer, consumes 6 liters in the city, and from 4.7 to 5.7 liters on the highway. In the combined cycle, the consumption is 4.4 liters per 100 kilometers. At the same time, acceleration to hundreds occurs in just 7.4 seconds. While the price of this car can be high, you can lease Toyota RAV4 hybrid for an affordable price.

4. Hyundai Tucson Hybrid
Following the Japanese manufacturers, the Koreans also entered the fight for efficiency and environmental friendliness by releasing the next version of the Hyundai Tucson hybrid crossover. Thanks to the power plant, the crossover rides more smoothly, and the engine is more efficient. The most important thing is its consumption. If in a conventional Hyundai Tucson in the urban cycle fuel consumption was at the level of 10 liters or even more, then in the hybrid version this figure dropped to 7.5, and in the combined mode, it is 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

5. Lexus NX 450h+
The Lexus NX 450h+ is Lexus' first vehicle in the plug-in hybrid category. This vehicle, like most of the cars listed above, can become an electric car for a short time, namely, for 97 kilometers. As for the engine, there is a 2.5-liter gasoline engine under the hood, and the total power is 304 horsepower. Whereas earlier a conventional Lexus model with similar power would consume at least 10 liters per 100 kilometers, this one consumes an incredible 0.9-1.1 liters per 100 kilometers thanks to a well-thought-out system for switching between gasoline and electricity.

6. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a continuation of the beloved off-road vehicle, which can be driven not only on smooth urban roads. This crossover has three engines at once: the first is a 133-horsepower gasoline engine with a volume of 2.4 liters, and the second and third are electric motors installed on each axle. One electric motor produces 116 horsepower, the other 136. All this together has reduced fuel consumption to 6.2 liters in mixed mode.

It seems like a lot, especially considering the previous result. But the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is actually bigger than an Audi, heavier, and in a different crossover class. In addition, this car can drive a distance of 87 kilometers on electric motors.

7. Ford Escape Hybrid
The Ford Escape is also a plug-in hybrid that's more reliable and fuel-efficient for 2022. According to the results of test drives, the consumption in mixed mode is 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers, and this is taking into account the fact that the total power of this crossover is 200 horsepower, which allows it to accelerate to 229 kilometers per hour.

To make it clearer what a big step the engineers have taken towards efficiency, previous versions of the Ford Escape with the same power, but a pure gasoline engine, consumed at least 9.8 liters on the highway and about 13 in the city.

8. Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
This subcompact crossover, like the previous ones, combines the autonomy of a gasoline engine and the efficiency of an electric one. Although compact, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid has more passenger space than most of its competitors. But what is more important is its fuel consumption. For a hundred in mixed mode, this car consumes 4.9 liters.
