Overview

Miscarriage is a condition which results in the loss of a fetus before 20 weeks or pregnancy. Basically, it is found to occur during the first trimester or initial three months of pregnancy.

Causes Of Miscarriage

There can be different types of causes responsible for miscarriages. Out of which, the first one can be genetic or chromosomal abnormalities. For example, the fetus can contain an extra or missing chromosome in many cases. There can be a role of age in the genetic issue and it is said that the risk raises to over 50% after a woman crosses the age of 40.

One of the major causes of miscarriage is the improper implantation of the fertilized egg or ovum which is not able to reach in the proper place. For maintaining a successful pregnancy, there is a requirement of a fertilized egg to implant inside the uterine cavity of the female candidate. The fertilized egg implants outside the uterine cavity in ectopic pregnancies which results in miscarriage.

Even if a woman has gone with prior intentional abortions, there can be a higher risk for her regarding miscarriage in the upcoming pregnancies. Intentional abortion is responsible for causing the cervix to become sensitive, incompetent and irritable, which results in miscarriage. At such times, the body of the female candidate gets unable to maintain sufficient levels of hormones which are required to support a pregnancy.

Types Of Miscarriage

Miscarriage is divided into different types. Out of which the first one is an inevitable or incomplete miscarriage. There is an abdominal or back pain escorted by bleeding with an open cervix. Next is threatened miscarriage where some degrees of early pregnancy uterine bleeding attended by lower backache or cramping. Cervix remains closed and such type of bleeding is often the result of implantation.

Even there can be a missed miscarriage where a woman gets unable to know about it. It happens when the embryonic death happens but there seems no expulsion of the embryo. Next one is recurrent miscarriage that is defined as three or more successive first trimester miscarriages and can affect 1% of a couple attempting to conceive.

Unknown Causes Of Miscarriage

Women need to keep special care at the time of trying for a baby. It is beneficial to get a full medical evaluation by the physician because there can be a risk of miscarriage with untreated medical conditions like thyroid disease or diabetes. Even there can be a higher risk when she comes under the influence of infections like listeria, rubella, measles, gonorrhoea, mumps, parvovirus, etc.

There is a requirement to keep in mind about certain factors when trying for a baby. Some women have a habit of chewing tobacco, smoking cigarette or drinking alcohol. They must need to know that all such things are able to develop the risk of miscarriage. Even some studies have also mentioned that consumption of high caffeine can also contain an increased risk of miscarriage. One of the greatest things is that such factors are often the easiest to address and rectify. There is a requirement to quit smoking, restricting complete use of tobacco and alcohol, and even dropping down weight can improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.
Even the consumption of illegal drugs can put the mother at great risk of having miscarriages. Illicit drugs along with some prescribed drugs contain an ability to cross into the fetal blood circulation resulting towards miscarriages. It is important not to take prescription medication unless it is specially prescribed for her. The prescribing doctor must be aware of her pregnancy. Along with that, there is a strong need to avoid taking illicit drugs as they can prove serious harm to the overall health of a person's body.

Miscarriage Treatment

One of the major objectives of the treatment during or after the miscarriage is to avert haemorrhaging or infection from a woman's body. The earlier a woman is in the pregnancy, her body will be more likely to expel all the fetal tissue by own and there will be no need for further medical procedures. If her body gets unable to expel all the tissue, D&C (dilation and curettage) will be applied that is a common procedure to stop bleeding and prevent infection. Bleeding must be monitored closely once a woman reaches her home. If there is a sign of an increase in the bleeding or the onset of fever or chills, she must not wait for too much to call the doctor.
